The 2023/24 NFL season ended in utter heartbreak for the San Francisco 49ers. They reached Super Bowl LVIII to lock horns with rivals, Kansas City Chiefs, once again. Only to fall to another crushing defeat having been just seconds from victory.

It was a rematch of the 49ers’ narrow loss to the Chiefs at Super Bowl LIV. However, having come so close to winning last season’s finale, they were part of only the second Super Bowl to head into overtime, eventually losing 25-22 in cruel fashion.

Hope Springs Eternal for the 49ers

Encouragingly for fans of the 49ers, the latest betting lines for Super Bowl LIX expect San Francisco to do what they do best and bounce back. The 49ers are +600 second favorites with FanDuel Sportsbook to lift the Lombardi Trophy in early 2025. FanDuel is considered one of the best betting apps for NFL this season, thanks to its fast and intuitive platform, lending itself well to dynamic live betting.

Despite San Francisco being tipped as a +600 contender for Super Bowl LIX, what are the leading sportsbook traders seeing in the 49ers to have such conviction about their recovery traits?

Assessing the 49ers’ NFL 2024/25 Roster

At quarterback, Brock Purdy comes into this second full season with the 49ers as a Pro Bowler. Lots will be expected from him this season, especially after ranking so highly in the league’s passing rankings. San Francisco’s running backs are roughly the same as last season, which will be of comfort to fans considering they clocked the second-highest rushing yards in 2023/24.

There’s much intrigue surrounding first-round draft pick, Ricky Pearsall. The wide receiver has had injury issues in preseason and would have shrugged off a shoulder problem to be in contention for the opening week had it not been for a tragic shooting incident at San Francisco’s Union Square.

Draft pick, Dominick Puni, has been a standout performer in preseason, failing to surrender a sack in his three appearances. The defensive line needed major surgery in the close season, and it’ll be interesting to see how the likes of Leonard Floyd, Jordan Elliott, Maliek Collins, and Yetur Gross-Matos fare.

Looking at the 49ers’ Preseason Form

In the 49ers’ three preseason games ahead of the 2024/25 NFL season, it was something of a mixed bag of results and performances. The opening fixture against the Tennessee Titans resulted in a 17-13 defeat, which will have alarmed some fans considering the Titans are one of the least-fancied teams in both conferences this season.

They bounced back well to defeat the New Orleans Saints 16-10 a week later. Although, like the Titans, the Saints aren’t expected to pull up any trees this year. Their preseason finale against the Las Vegas Raiders was another competitive affair, with the game tied at 24-24.

It’s true that 49ers fans have been dealt harsh lessons about fairytales in sport – specifically, that they don’t always occur. However, to be burnt twice in such close succession – by the same time – feels like cruel luck.

Of course, there are no guarantees that the 2024/25 NFL season will yield a Lombardi Trophy for San Francisco either. Nevertheless, the 49ers organization, backed by strong leadership from Paraag Marathe, will be as determined as ever to land their first Super Bowl triumph in three decades.
