Gurriel's 3-run homer leads D-backs over Brewers 7-3

PHOENIX (AP) - Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit a three-run homer for his first long ball with the Diamondbacks, rookie Drey Jameson pitched four scoreless innings and Arizona beat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-3 on Wednesday.

The Diamondbacks took two of three in the series and have won five of their past six games.

Arizona took a 5-0 lead through four innings thanks to Gurriel's third-inning drive and shoddy Brewers defense that committed three errors. Milwaukee starter Janson Junk (0-1) gave up five runs, including four earned, over 4 2/3 innings. The 27-year-old - making his first start of the season - surrendered eight hits, struck out two and walked two.

Jameson - wearing his usual "Scooby Doo" themed shoes - gave up just three hits and struck out four in his first start this season. Gurriel and Josh Rojas both had three hits. Kyle Nelson (2-0) got the win on the mound.

William Contreras had three hits for the Brewers, including a double. Christian Yelich had two RBIs.

TWINS 3, WHITE SOX 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Sonny Gray threw five scoreless innings in a third straight strong start to open the season for Minnesota, outdueling Lucas Giolito to beat Chicago.

Gray (2-0) gave up three hits and two walks with five strikeouts. He was pulled after only 78 pitches after lowering his ERA to 0.53. Jhoan Duran finished the ninth for his third save after allowing a two-out homer to Lenyn Sosa.

The only setback for the Twins was yet another injury. Shortstop Kyle Farmer left the game in the fourth after being hit in the face with a fastball from Giolito.

Giolito (0-1) struck out seven Twins in six innings, his only run allowed was on a bases-loaded groundout by Michael Taylor that scored Ryan Jeffers.

YANKEES 4, GUARDIANS 3

CLEVELAND (AP) - Oswaldo Cabrera hit a tiebreaking, two-out double in the ninth inning off Cleveland closer Emmanuel Clase and the New York Yankees survived a nerve-racking finish.

Cabrera's shot to right off Clase (1-1) scored Giancarlo Stanton, who reached on an infield single with one out and went to second on shortstop Amed Rosario's throwing error.

Yankees closer Clay Holmes loaded the bases in the ninth on a hit batter and two walks before striking out Rosario for the final out and his fourth save. Wandy Peralta (1-0) pitched a hitless eighth for the win.

The series finale included Yankees manager Aaron Boone being ejected in the first inning following a confusing and controversial play, and second base umpire Larry Vanover getting struck in the face by a relay throw in the fifth.

ASTROS 7, PIRATES 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Jose Urquidy scattered two hits over six innings and rookie Corey Julks hit the first home run of his big league career as Houston shut out Pittsburgh.

Urquidy (1-0) allowed singles by Carlos Santana and Jack Suwinski as the reigning champions took two of three in their first visit to Pittsburgh since 2013. Urquidy struck out two and walked three.

Julks, Chas McCormick and Jose Abreu had two hits each for Houston. Alex Bregman homered for the second straight game, a three-run shot in the seventh that gave the Astros plenty of breathing room.

Rich Hill (0-2) worked six efficient innings but received little support from his teammates.

MARINERS 5, CUBS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Logan Gilbert pitched 6 2/3 innings of four-hit ball, Teoscar Hernandez and Jarred Kelenic hit consecutive home runs in the eighth and Seattle snapped a three-game losing streak.

Kelenic's homer landed in the upper center field bleachers and traveled 482 feet, the second-longest at Wrigley Field since Statcast began tracking in 2015 and trailing only Willson Contreras' 491-footer in Game 4 of the 2017 NL Championship Series.

Gilbert (1-1) recovered from a rocky start by retiring 12 consecutive batters and allowing only two hits after Nico Hoerner and Nick Madrigal hit consecutive singles in the first.

Cubs starter Marcus Stroman's scoreless streak to start the season ended in the third at 14 innings when Eugenio Suarez hit an RBI single. Stroman (2-1) allowed two runs and five hits in six innings, and Brad Boxberger gave up an RBI single to Ty France in the seventh.

ANGELS 3, NATIONALS 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Griffin Canning pitched five solid innings in his first big league appearance in 22 months, and rookie Logan O'Hoppe drove in the tiebreaking run for Los Angeles against Washington.

Brett Phillips scored an early run, drove in another with a bases-loaded walk and stole a probable homer from Keibert Ruiz in center field during his eventful first start for the Angels, who took two of three from Washington.

Canning, a Gold Glove winner in 2020, hadn't pitched in the majors since June 2021 because of a back injury. Matt Moore (1-0) won in relief, and Jose Quijada earned his second save.

Mason Thompson (0-1) took the loss.

METS 5, PADRES 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso homered, David Robertson got four key outs and the New York Mets beat San Diego to take two of three from the Padres in a rematch of their playoff series last October.

Tylor Megill (3-0) allowed two runs, three hits and three walks in five innings for the Mets, who lost last year's Wild Card Series to the Padres 2-1.

Brandon Nimmo had three hits and two RBIs and Tommy Pham added a run-scoring single in the seventh for the Mets. Despite a 7-6 record, the Mets are batting just .218.

Blake Snell (0-2) gave up four runs, six hits and five walks in five-plus innings for the Padres, who headed home following a 4-3 trip to Atlanta and New York. San Diego went 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position and stranded nine runners.

MARLINS 3, PHILLIES 2, 10 INNINGS

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Bryan De La Cruz won the game with an RBI single in the 10th inning and Jorge Soler's solo tying homer in the eighth sparked Miami to take two of three from the NL champions.

De La Cruz singled off Craig Kimbrel and knocked home Nick Fortes, who had pinch run for automatic runner Soler. Gregory Soto (1-2) took the loss. De La Cruz was thrown out at second trying to extend the hit into a double.

A.J. Puk (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings for Miami.

The Phillies wasted a solid outing from Zack Wheeler. He threw 95 pitches and allowed three hits against the Marlins.

CARDINALS 7, ROCKIES 4

DENVER (AP) - Nolan Gorman hit a late tiebreaking home run for the second straight day, lifting St. Louis over Colorado.

Nolan Arenado hit his 139th home run at Coors Field and Tyler O'Neill got his first home run since opening day.

With the score 4-4 in the eighth, Willson Contreras hit a two-out chopper off Justin Lawrence (0-1) to second baseman Ryan McMahon. C.J. Cron, playing several steps off first, moved toward second and was beaten by Contreras to the first base bag. Cron was charged with an error.

Colorado had tied the score in the seventh when Elias Diaz hit an RBI single off Drew VerHagen and Jurickson Profar had a run-scoring grounder against Andre Pallante (1-0). ___
